Hi my name is Norman and my topic for today is to talk about why all New Zealanders should learn Te Reo Maori. We should all learn Te Reo to protect the Maori language.
Firstly, in 1953 Maori people couldn’t talk in Te Reo Maori in New Zealand because if they did they would get punished. In 1960, 30,000 people including some from Victoria University, and lots of other people protested against the government. So there was a need to bring back the Maori language.
Secondly, in 1975 Maori Language week was a thing and in 1987 Maori was an official language in New Zealand. So that is the history of Maori language week. All New Zealanders should learn how to speak Te reo Maori because people worked hard to fight for it.
Finally, all New Zealanders should understand the language of Te Reo Maori because it’s our NZ history and language.
In conclusion, all New Zealanders should learn how to speak Te Reo Maori because it is the language of the ancestors who found the islands of NZ and named the islands Aotearoa.
